LG Optimus LTE2 hands-on

LG Optimus LTE2 hands-on, ,

LG calmly waited for Samsung to announce their Galaxy S III, then on the same day announced their own powerhouse device in the new LG Optimus LTE2. This phone has all the top-tier specs you’ve come to expect, and a few you didn’t. Like 2GB of RAM and stock wireless charging. Currently an exclusive to Korea we were able to get some hands-on with LG’s new flagship smartphone so check it out.

LG’s new LTE2 is aiming directly for Samsung’s Galaxy S III. It features extremely impressive specs, a brilliant and beautiful display, and will be equipped with 4G LTE — something not all Galaxy S III’s can say. The screen is a tiny bit smaller than the Galaxy S III, coming in at 4.7-inches just like the HTC One X, but it’s a True HD IPS display that looks gorgeous and plenty more going for it. Check out the video then we’ll break down the specs:

One of the biggest points with the LTE2 is the fact they’ve managed to squeeze 2GB of RAM into this phone — talk about laptop type power. The full specs are a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 True HD IPS display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor with 4G LTE integration for Korea, that huge 2GB memory spec (but sadly phone uses almost 1GB on idle), 16GB internal storage, standard built-in wireless charging capabilities, an 8 megapixel camera with voice actions, and a huge 2,150 mAh battery for all day battery life.

As we mentioned above, the 8 megapixel camera takes full 1080p video but while in camera mode LG’s added simple voice commands. While on camera simply say “kimchi” (Korea) and the LTE2 will start capturing video, or snap a picture all hands free — it’s just that simple.

It also has Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC capability for Android 4.0 ICS Beam which also supports LG Tag+ we detailed here. The display is truly impressive and the build quality seems improved from recent LG devices. The back has a soft-touch texture that almost feels like a fabric and is extremely easy to hold, and again works with the wireless charging option as shown in the gallery below.

For now this powerhouse top-tier Android 4.0 ICS smartphone by LG is only hitting Korea, and will be available later this month. Enjoy the rest of the photos from the gallery below.

LG announces Optimus LTE2 with a whopping 2GB of RAM

LG announces Optimus LTE2 with a whopping 2GB of RAM, ,

LG Optimus LTE2

LG has announced the new Optimus LTE 2 for the Korean market, and there's a couple specs on-board that may have you looking twice. Besides the True HD IPS Display (of an unknown size, but it looks "big"), the LTE radio, 2150 mAh battery, Ice Cream Sandwich and other goodies we expect on a high-end LG phone, the LTE 2 also packs in 2 GB of RAM and a wireless charging solution. The details on the wireless charging are a bit sparse, but we do know it complies with  the World Association of Wireless Charging (WPC) standards and can be charged with a standard charging mat, regardless of manufacturer. We like standards.

But we do know what 2 GB of RAM means. First off, it's at least double what the phone your using, or thinking about buying today, has. If you didn't buy a new laptop this year, there's a good chance the LTE 2 has the same amount of RAM as your notebook computer. For a smartphone, it's a lot — as in a whole-hell-of-a-lot. That means more applications open and running at once, for better multitasking, and less re-drawing. We like more multitasking as much as we like standards.

The LTE 2 is expected to debut on five carriers in Korea this month, with other markets to follow. Will we see it in the United States or Europe? We sure hope so.

LG Optimus LTE2 detailed with 2GB of RAM and wireless charging

LG Optimus LTE2 detailed with 2GB of RAM and wireless charging, ,
Cory Gunther

Hey look, a phone announcement today from someone other than Samsung. It looks like LG is trying to spoil the Sammy party (and failing) by announcing their own impressive smartphone today in the all new Optimus LTE2 — complete with a “True HD” IPS display and a massive 2GB of RAM. The phone might not have the same beautiful curves as the Galaxy S III but it does have a couple of things going for it. More details after the break.

According to the official announcement by LG this phone will be coming mid-May to Korea, and elsewhere shortly after. While we don’t have all the details and specs it looks like the LTE2 will be powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, have a True HD IPS display of unknown size, but appears to be 4.3 or 4.5-inches in size.

The biggest mind blowing feature here is the inclusion of 2GB of RAM inside this beast — a first for any smartphone. Then it will also come equipped with a 2,150 mAh battery, 4G LTE, and be available on at least 5 carriers throughout Korea by the end of the month. LG briefly mentions some wireless charging features as well as an enhanced “Renal smart camera” according to translation. Check out the few pictures in the gallery below and we will be looking for more details shortly on the new Optimus LTE2 from LG. We don’t expect this to be available anytime soon in the US, if ever, but it was worth a look for the 2GB of RAM alone.

LG Optimus LTE Renamed Optimus True HD LTE, Don’t Expect True HD Resolution!

LG Optimus LTE Renamed Optimus True HD LTE, Don’t Expect True HD Resolution!

Remember the LG Optimus LTE handset we’ve reviewed here? Well, the device appeared in the news yet again, this time getting ready to launch in Hong Kong at the end of the month. However, this time it will be rebranded as Optimus True HD LTE. And although the name is True HD, don’t expect 1080p resolution from its screen.

The True HD part of the naming was put there to rub it in the face of Samsung, that’s praising its own HD Super AMOLED technology on the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S II HD LTE. Of course, LG’s 1280 x 720 PenTile screen doesn’t count as truly HD because of the low number of sub pixels, but they’re never shy to attack AMOLED’s exaggerated colors and higher power consumption and propose LG technology instead. The South Korean firm revealed that its AH-IP{S screen has a very good power consumption, so it’s much more efficient than Samsung’s technology, especially across varied levels of whiteness.

Of course, we love how crisp the Galaxy Nexus was, but having also seen the LG Optimus LTE I can’t say the two are that different… maybe the Galaxy Nexus is a bit more vibrant, I’ll give you that much. I expect Samsung to reply its rivals with a real True HD screen, maybe on the rumored 1080p Galaxy S III?!

LG Optimus 3D Max is GCF approved; Q2 release expected

With the ever increasing popularity of 3D movies and the ability to view entire movies on your smartphone, have you ever thought about combining the two? Well, you aren’t the first – LG brought the Optimus 3D, the first 3D phone, to market in April, last year. We now have an heir-apparent to the Optimus 3D, LG announcing the arrival of the Optimus 3D Max (with naming variations of Optimus 3D 2 and Optimus 3D Cube, for different markets).

Does it deserve to be called “Max”, you ask? Let’s see. It features a larger 4.3-inch screen and the 3D video shooting dual cameras have been upgraded to 5MP each. The Optimus 3D Max also matches to some extent the look and feel of other high-end phones soon to be available on the market, being thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

Other specifications include:

  • 1.2 Ghz dual core TI OMAP 4430 processor
  • 1 GB RAM
  • 4.3″ IPS LCD Screen (Glasses-free 3D screen)
  • 800×480 resolution
  • Android 2.3 OS
  • 802.11 b/g/n
  • 1520 mAH
  • Dual 5MP Camera, with 720p 3D recording

While the Optimus 3D Max has its obvious advantages on the 3D playing field, which is an understatement considering its almost total monopoly in the sector (with only the HTC Evo 3D providing some competition), the rest of the specs leave much to be desired. With every other manufacturer looking to move to quad-core processors and Android 4.0, the specs on the Optimus 3D Max are certainly disappointing. While there might be an upgrade to ICS eventually, it’s very surprising to see that Android 4 is not available out of the box, especially considering LG’s imminent release of its flagship device, the Optimus 4X HD.

With Google recommending the three capacitive menu buttons layout, another somehow expected (considering it is launching with Android 2.3), but unwelcome feature is the four capacitive button strip, which will make optimization for Android 4.0 even harder.

The LG Optimus 3D Max has just received GCF (Global Certification Forum) approval and an eventual FCC approval is only a short while away. While there is no official announcement on a release date or price, a Q2 2012 release is expected.

The phone is definitely an upgrade from the Optimus 3D, with better form factor and specs, but it does not match up to the variety of quad-core Android 4.0 smartphones expected to be released soon, with its toughest competitor probably being LG’s own Optimus 4X HD.

Unless, of course, you prefer 3D phones. Then this phone is the best.

Here is a short video of the LG Optimus 3D Max hands-on at this year’s Mobile World Conference, courtesy of IntoMobile.

Your thoughts? Is 3D that important on a mobile phone so as to ignore the almost disappointing specifications?

LG Coming Out With Optimus L Line; Three Devices Headed for the MWC

If you’re keeping tabs on what to expect at the upcoming Mobile World Congress, we have new information for you! After announcing the Optimus Vu, LG has added three more devices to their lineup called the L-Style category.

According to LG, this new category refers to a ‘new design identity’ which showcases a ‘timeless design with finer details.’ The devices under this category all hold the 5 aesthetic elements which LG has set as a standard:

  • Modern Square Style for a comfortable grip
  • Floating Mass Technology for a slimmer look
  • Seamless Layout for a more intuitive arrangement of keys
  • Harmonized Design Contrast utilizing metallic accents
  • Sensuous Slim Shape that naturally draws one’s attention

Included in this category are the new L-Style smartphones namely the Optimus L3, the Optimus L5, and the Optimus L7.

Optimus L3

The Optimus L3 has been said to have a 3.2-inch display. While a Europe release has been set for March, there are no details on its Canadian launch yet.

Optimus L5 and Optimus L7

Meanwhile, the Optimus L5 bears a 4-inch display and runs on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Just like the Optimus L5, the Optimus L7 runs on ICS. It has a slightly bigger screen (4.3-inches), compared to the former.

These two devices are said to launch ‘in the first half of the year;’ which roughly means Q2. Again, there have been no details on a Canada launch.

Other specs of these three devices will be revealed at the MWC this weekend.

LG Optimus Cube 3D

LG today announced the Optimus 3D Cube, brining the "next-generation 3D" exclusively to Korean carrier SK Telecom. The phone sports a 4.3-inch IPS LCD display with dual 5-megapixel cameras on the back to handle the 3D action, and a .3MP shooter up front. It's running Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 1520 mAh battery.

The Optimus 3D cube has on-board 3D editing — a first — and it comes with NFC tags so you can set up your own profiles just by tapping the phone.

LG Optimus Vu revealed, will go head-to-head with Galaxy Note

Somewhere a former Palm exec is scratching his head in confusion right now. LG has officially unveiled the Optimus Vu, and like the Samsung Galaxy Note it sports a hideaway stylus for annotations, sketching, and jotting down important reminders.

At 5-inches, the Optimus Vu is similarly sized, too, though its 1024×768 display and 4:3 setup is closer to the traditional paper journals and notebooks people are used to writing on than the 16:9 Galaxy Note. Yes, it does look a little uncomfortable to hold the way you would a smartphone, but LG’s probably not intending for this to be used as a large phone so much as a small tablet.

LG’s official specs line up with what had been reported before. Along with the 5-inch IPS display, the Optimus Vu offers a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, 8MP rear-facing and 1.3MP front-facing cameras, and an HDMI port. Again like so many other recently revealed Android smartphones, the Optimus Vu will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. LG does say an update to ICS is already in the works, but no specific release date is mentioned.

The Optimus Vu’s 2,080mAh power pack isn’t going to provide as much runtime as the beastly battery in the Droid Razr Maxx. In fact, it’s probably not going to keep up with its direct competition: the Galaxy Note’s battery offers about 25% more juice. The Vu is, however, 1.2mm thinner than the Galaxy Note, though that 4:3 wideness will still make it slightly harder to stuff in the average pocket.

As predicted, LG will be showing off the Optimus Vu at MWC 2012 this month, where they may reveal a few additional tidbits about the device. Right now, it’s slated for a March launch in Korea — with no plans announced for a Western rollout at the moment.
