Panasonic Eluga available in Japan on March 29th, Europe in April

panasonic-eluga

It seems like Panasonic decided to step things up and make the Panasonic Eluga available in Japan a month ahead of the scheduled European launch. There are different theories as to why Panasonic decided to reschedule (seemingly out of the blue) the launch of the Eluga, but it’s certain that the phone will hit the stores in Japan on March 26 via NTT Docomo.

For Panasonic, the assumed objective of the Eluga is to make a difference on the unique Japanese phone market, by moving away from the look and feel of most competing phones. As a company representative said, Panasonic is “trying to offer a great experience free from the bells and whistles found on phones for the Japanese market”. At the same time, the sleek Eluga is Panasonic’s bid to make a comeback to the Western markets, which, for many years, were largely ignored by the Japanese tech giants (with the notable exception of Sony).

The Eluga was supposed to come to Europe in March, but the launch date has been postponed, according to the official site of Panasonic Europe. For unknown reasons, the European public will have to wait a couple of weeks longer to try out this great-looking, yet sturdy phone.

A Glance at the Panasonic Eluga

We have already seen the Eluga at MWC, so we have a pretty good idea about its specs and features. The screen will be a 4.3-incher running at 960×540 resolution, while the Panasonic Eluga Power (the big brother) is expected to have a beautiful 5-inch display. The two devices are expected to offer a 8MP camera. The most unique trait of the Eluga is its slim profile of just 7.8mm. We haven’t got the chance to evaluate the smartphone hands-on, but we’ve heard from those who have handled it that the Eluga feels even slimmer than it looks, thanks to it smooth curves.

On the down side, such a slim phone cannot offer too much in terms of battery life – just an 1,150 mAh battery, which Panasonic claims to provide 300h of functioning in standby. To sweeten the pill, Panasonic included a special feature, the “super charging” mode, which is supposed to dramatically decrease the amount of time need for the Eluga’s battery to fully charge.

The Eluga will come with Android Gingerbread (v2.3.5), however, an update to Ice Cream Sandwich will be available this summer, promises Panasonic. The weight of the phone will be only 103 grams, which is very impressive, considering the generous size and the fact that the device is water and dust-resistant.

How will the Eluga perform once it’s finally officially released? We will find out very soon!

Temple Run Gets Android Release Date: March 27

Temple Run Android Release Date: March 27

Temple Run, one of the most popular free games in the Apple App Store, will soon make its debut on Android as well. According to developer Imangi Studios, the Temple Run Android release date will be March 27, although the game was previously supposed to reach Google’s mobile OS in February.

The endless gameplay of Temple Run is fairly simple by nature: collect as many gold coins as you can, using gestures to jump, slide, duck, and run, while evading the evil monkeys guarding the temple and all the obstacles in your path. Here is a YouTube video showcasing the Temple Run gameplay:

Keith Shepherd, co-founder of Imangi Studios, on Temple Run’s port to Android: “We are excited to finally share the Android release date with our fans who have been so enthusiastic and supportive of Temple Run,[…] By expanding to more mobile devices, we hope to provide the same addictive and fast-paced gameplay to an entirely new group of players”.

Temple Run originally launched on iOS in August 2011, quickly becoming one of the most popular free games in the App Store, but also one of the most popular free apps available on the iPad and iPhone. Currently the seventh most-popular free game in Apple’s App Store, Temple Run was downloaded more than 40 million times, and boasts roughly 7 million daily active users. The Indiana Jones-styled game was also the Top Free App and the Top Grossing App on iOS for the month of January 2012. These are impressive figures, to say the least.

How do you guys feel about Temple Run? Will you be grabbing the free Android game, once it gets released on March 27, or will you stick to your Angry Birds instead? Let us know in the comment section below!

LG Optimus Cube 3D

The phone sports a 4.3-inch IPS LCD display with dual 5-megapixel cameras on the back to handle the 3D action, and a .3MP shooter up front. It's running Android 2.3 Gingerbread powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 1520 mAh battery.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G moves from ‘later this year’ to ‘in late March,’ gets $149 price tag

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

When the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G was announced at CES last month, it was done so without a hard release date. Not surprising — that's how it's done. We still don't have a firm date, but Samsung and T-Mobile tonight in a new release have dropped "late March" on us. We've also got on-contract pricing to go along with it — $ 149.99 after $ 50 mail-in rebate.

The Galaxy S Blaze 4G, in addition to being a mouthful, is one of T-Mobile's newer 42Mbps devices. That is, it can pull down data really fast. Other specs include:

  • 3.97-inch Super AMOLED display
  • Android 2.3 Gingerbread
  • Dual-core qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor at 1.5 GHz
  • 5MP rear camera
  • 1.3MP front-facing camera

Stay tuned for our next installment, when we might actually get a release date.

Angry Birds Space coming on March 22

Well, what do you know, Rovio is pushing out another Angry Birds game! Surprised? Didn’t think so. Though details are scarce, a couple of brief teasers have told us that there is a new game called Angry Birds Space that will be flung into app stores next month. It will be the fourth full game for the franchise, after Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and the movie tie-in Angry Birds: Rio.

The teaser trailer (below) and an even less-informative website are all we have to go on at this point. A bird that is either robotic or wearing a spacesuit is used in the promo, as well as the phrase “one small fling for a bird, one quantum leap for bird kind.”

Considering the franchise’s formula and the subject material, we can probably expect long distance shots at space structures. It could be similar to the low-gravity levels that were introduced in last summer’s Angry Birds Seasons: Summer Pignics update (pictured, right). Who will be the enemies this time around? Pigs? Aliens? Your guess is as good as ours.

One of the few details that is revealed is that game’s release date. Angry Birds Space will arrive on March 22 (just in time to enjoy on your iPad 3′s retina display). No platform details were released, but we would expect to see this on both iOS and Android at launch.

Angry Birds has established itself as the king of casual gaming, but we could see smartphones and tablets begin to transition into more serious gaming platforms. Now that the devices are picking up quad-core chips and more powerful GPUs, 2012 could be the year that the line between mobile devices and dedicated consoles blur.

With that said, Angry Birds — and Rovio’s mega-empire of Angry Birds merchandise — isn’t going away anytime soon. You can see the latest installment’s trailer below; just don’t expect much juicy info:
