Sprint Galaxy Nexus Finally Coming To Town April 22 For $199

Sprint Galaxy Nexus Finally Coming To Town April 22 For 9, ,
Aira Bongco

We can remember when Sprint made a formal announcement regarding its release of the Sprint Galaxy Nexus back in January 2012. From there, lots of rumors came up but nothing has led us to the actual launch date and price of the handset. But now, the wait is over. You can now get the handset for only $ 199 from April 22 onwards.

Sprint Galaxy Nexus

Sprint Galaxy Nexus

Sprint has just made an official announcement that it will be releasing the Galaxy Nexus on April 22 and it will sell for $ 199.99 if you are going to sign-up for the 2-year contract. The latest handset is said to run on the 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processor with OMAP, 1GB of RAM, a PowerVR GPU clocked at 308MHz and an AMOLED screen with 1280 x 720 reso9lution. Aside from this, it will also be powered by a 5 megapixel camera that has a 1080p video recording, NFC and instant capture feature. And on top of this, it will be running on the latest Android version, the Ice Cream Sandwich. This means that you can install lots of different apps on your tablet as well.

But what makes Sprint’s version of the Galaxy Nexus different? Well, if you have tried Verizon’s version you will know that it lacks the Google Wallet service. Google wallet is a great application where you can use your phone to pay for anything. This is a technology implemented in Japan where you only need to swipe your phone and you can already pay for anything including your groceries. It is like a virtual wallet so to speak.

So if you want to get you hands on the Galaxy Nexus with wallet, then you should get ready for the Sprint release on April 22. If you managed to be the first to get on board, you can also get $ 50 of free Google wallet credits. Pre-orders start now so be sure to get yours ahead of time.

Lava’s Xolo X900 is the first Intel Medfield phone, coming soon in India

The Verge

It must’ve been hard for Intel to watch Qualcomm, Nvidia, and, to a lesser extent, Texas Instrument gaining such a strong foothold in the mobile CPU industry over the last couple of years.  But while the Santa Clara based company has been quite late to the party, we sort of expected to see Intel making a grand entrance. Nevertheless, the first Medfield smartphone will come from one relatively unknown Lava company in India.

Dubbed Xolo X900, the first to market Intel-inside Android phone is powered by a 1.6GHz Medfield processor. Beyond the processor that it is shipping with and the expected Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread flavor, other details are still unknown. It’s been rumored that the phone would have an 8MP rear shooter.

From the pictures that folks at The Verge have taken, the Xolo X900 is thought to have a 3.5- or 3.7-inch display with 1024 x 768 resolution. According to the same report, the phone is relatively light and the screen didn’t disappoint. They did find the hardware buttons on the phone to be on the clunky side, while the placement of the capacitive buttons may not be too comfortable to use.

Lava’s Xolo X900 will only be released in India and there’s still no price and release date information. Time will tell if the phone will be a hot item or be obliterated by the heat.

Back in February, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that the company has ambitions to become the major player in the mobile market. Although Lava is the first to ship a Medfield phone, Intel has also struck deals with the likes of Motorola, Lenovo, and France Telecom’s Orange.  It’s unclear yet when Motorola will release its first Medfield phone, but Lenovo is planning to release its Intel device in May, to be followed by Orange in June.

Earlier reports suggest that the Intel Medfield chip would be reserved for entry level smartphones, which should explain why Lava was approached in the first place. It’s interesting to see what Motorola would come up with, being one of the bigger companies on Intel’s to-do list.

Lenovo mid-range IdeaTab S2109 tablet unveiled, coming soon

Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 Tablet

Lenovo hasn’t unveiled or released a tablet for a while now, which is not a very “standard” behavior for the Chinese-based technology company, but the silence is about to be disturbed pretty soon. The Lenovo IdeaTab S2019 is a mid-range Android-based tablet, and, even though it doesn’t yet have an official release date or price tag next to its name, it should hit the market rather soon.

With a 9.7-inch 4:3 aspect display (very similar to the one sported by Apple’s iPad), the S2019 doesn’t have a full spec sheet officially confirmed, but it’s likely that it will be oriented towards the mid-range market.

The IPS panel will come with 1024 x 768 resolution, while under the hood we still don’t know much about the device. Early rumors pointed towards either a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor or a 1.5 GHz Krait chipset, but the guys at SlashGear are saying that the tablet will in fact be powered by a TI OMAP proc.

Lenovo’s future slate should draw some attention with its looks, as it is set to come with a unibody shell, a “gunmetal” finish, and an 8.9 mm (0.35 inches) profile. As far as I can tell from the first official photos, the 10-incher does look elegant and slim, but it might actually not feature a metallic body.

Other known features include a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, a microUSB port, microHDMI, and a microSD card slot. The device will also feature four SRS Trumedia speakers on the back and a battery that should last for ten hours between charges, according to manufacturer claims (I would expect an hour or two less in day-to-day use, though).

Finally, in terms of software, the Lenovo IdeaTab S2109 will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box and will offer both Google Play access and access to Lenovo’s own app store.

There are still a lot of unknowns about the Lenovo IdeaTab S2109, but, for the time being, I think it’s safe to say that this is a pretty interesting tablet, which could draw some attention from technology enthusiasts in the near future. Stay tuned on our website for more details about the 10-incher, and, in the meantime, don’t forget to let us know your opinions on Lenovo’s future mid-ranger!

Samsung names its flexible display technology as the Youm, products coming out in 2012

Samsung Flexible OLED

There’s a new term that you may want to add to your geek speak vocab, for Samsung has finally decided on a name for its next-gen flexible displays. The flexible display technology, which the Korean tech giant has been showing off in prototype forms since last year, will be formally known as Youm.

What makes these flexible displays so unique? Unlike your run-of-the-mill LCD screen, Youm displays will be not only thinner and lighter, but also virtually unbreakable. It goes without saying that these are three traits we wouldn’t mind seeing in future phones and other mobile devices.

The four layers of the Youm display are the polarizer, encap (film), organic layer, and TFT (film). By removing glass from the equation and replacing it with a plastic substrate, it’s possible to create bendable and flexible screens.

samsung flexible display youm

With the branding of Samsung’s new flexible displays completed — curiously, Samsung has also filed for other trademark names, such as FAMOLED, WAMOLED, PAMOLED, and TAMOLED — we are inching closer to seeing this marvel of display technology in real products. Mass production of the Youm OLED displays will start soon, with the commercial launch of  products utilizing the technology expected by the end of the year.

We’d love to see a full-blown implementation of the Youm flexible display, but it’s better we keep expectations low for this year. You know, something along the lines of a device with a curved display, instead of a wearable Android wristband. When talking about mobile devices, remember that the screen is only one aspect. It may take some time for the technology behind other parts, such as the battery, processor, or even casing, to catch up.

How about a wager on a foldable tablet by 2013?

ICS for the Droid RAZR/MAXX and HTC Rezound coming next week, says Best Buy memo

Best Buy

We don't want anyone to get too excited and set themselves up for a heartbreak just yet, but a leaked document from Best Buy pins the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX for April 4, and the HTC Rezound on April 6. Anyone with a HTC Thunderbolt can tell you more about dates provided from Best Buy, and Motorola still hasn't given any type of ballpark date for the update for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which are still listed as being in the "evaluation and planning" stage. We've seen ICS leaks for both devices (the RAZR and RAZR MAXX run the same software) but nothing official from anyone involved. Both phones were to have ICS "soon" after release, but so far we're still waiting.

We want it to be true. We hope it's true. We're just naturally skeptical, especially when a third party like Best Buy is involved. We're sure nobody is trying to troll the Internets, but anyone who has worked in a corporate environment knows how things get fouled up. Here's hoping, and we'll know next week!

Yes, Angry Birds Space really is coming to Windows Phone

Despite a bevvy of new phones — both mid-range and high-end — and a much more full-featured OS in tow, Windows Phone continues to struggle in the mobile marketplace. Part of the blame has been placed on a lack of quality, high-profile apps — and Rovio has shed some light on what the problem is.

According to them, “it’s a big undertaking to support [Windows Phone]” and getting the latest installment of their smash-hit franchise —  Angry Birds Space — on Microsoft’s mobile OS requires a “complete rewrite.”

Blogger Henry Blodget had earlier stated that Rovio was giving Windows Phone the cold shoulder, but that turned out not to be the case. And really, it would’ve been a huge surprise to hear that Rovio wasn’t going to bring Angry Birds Space to Windows Phone.

Rovio’s first release  currently sits at the number one position in the Marketplace. There’s been a tremendous amount of hype surrounding the new release, and there’s no way that Microsoft — who are fighting tooth and nail to make Windows Phone a success — would stand idly by if Rovio had actually said they weren’t interested in porting.

It’s highly likely that Microsoft would have offered some sort of incentive (like a giant pile of cash) to get Rovio interested. Hey, if they’re offering up thousand-dollar laptops to people just for proving their phones beat a Windows Phone in a speed test, why would they not dangle a golden carrot in front of Rovio to keep their platform from looking like a black sheep?

HTC Vivid to get ICS in the ‘coming weeks’, leak available for the brave

HTC Vivid

The HTC Vivid should be seeing Ice Cream Sandwich shortly, and if you're the brave type there's a leak out in the wild you can flash today. When HTC and AT&T announced the HTC One X was coming to AT&T, there was a small part in the press release about the Vivid and it's ICS update, and that's been reinforced today in a press release for a new Beats Audio wireless speaker system exclusive for AT&T. The paragraph reads as follows:

Additionally, an enhanced audio experience will soon be available to HTC Vivid™ customers in the coming weeks.  Sound engineers at Beats Dr. Dre and software engineers at HTC have teamed up to bring an improved audio experience to the HTC Vivid through an upcoming software update that will provide Android 4.0, an updated HTC Sense experience and Beats By Dr. Dre audio profiles.

While "coming weeks" is a pretty vague term, it may be closer that anyone expects. A Vivid user was presented with an OTA update to Ice Cream Sandwich, and had the foresight to capture the file and hand it over to the hacking community. It's been converted to a flashable form, but there's a great big warning attached as it requires a different hboot with no reliable way to get back. Between the few reports of bricked devices, most people say the update is decent, bringing the Vivid to Android 4.0.3 and Sense to 3.6.

If you're the type who has to try things, be sure to read very carefully lest you have a shiny black HTC Vivid to add to the Android bone pile. If you're the more cautious type or haven't rooted your $ 600 phone (we don't blame you), hopefully you'll be seeing an update soon. In either case, follow along at the links below.

Samsung Announces Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Note 10.1 Coming

Last night, Samsung (who will not be holding any press conferences at MWC, apparently) announced the new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 slate. The new member of the Tab 2 series, which also includes the already introduced Tab 2 7.0, will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but really, is only a slight improvement over the previous-generation 10.1 Tab.

No word on the pricing yet, but according to Sammy’s press release, the new Tab 2 10.1 and 7.0 will first be available in the U.K., followed closely by a worldwide launch.

How is the new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 better than its kid sister, the Tab 2 7.0? Frankly, not in many ways. Both devices will run the new Android 4.0 ICS, flavored with Samsung’s customary TouchWiz skin, and both will have the same guts: 1GHz dual core processor, 1GB of RAM, similar 3G and Wi-Fi options and identical front and rear cameras. As we’ve said above, the Tab 2 10.1 battery is better – 7000 mAh, over the 4000 mAh of the Tab 7.0 – but that’s somewhat mandatory in order to accommodate the bigger screen. Speaking of which, the larger, better screen (1280 x 800 resolution, over 7.0’ 1024 x 600) is the most important differentiating factor between the two products.

The Tabs are Relegated to Second-tier, Galaxy Note 10.1 Takes Over

Overall, the Tab 2 series seems to be just a quick refresh of the first Tabs, the biggest improvement being the fact that they run Android 4.0 out of the box. In terms of hardware though, the two generations of Tabs are disappointingly similar.

Samsung may be trying to differentiate its products by intentionally letting the Tab series stagnate, while improving the Note line. If last year, the Tab 10.1 was the flagship device of the Koreans, now it seems that the flagship role will be taken over by the Galaxy Note 10.1, which Samsung is likely to announce in a few hours. If the Tab 2 series will be relegated to a second-tier role, we can at least expect some relatively affordable price tags.

The Note 10.1 is rumored to run on the dual-core Exynos 5250 chip and will also get a hugely improved screen resolution, at 2560 x 1600. We are waiting for more details on the Note 10.1, and we’ll keep you posted as news break. Stay close! Meanwhile, check out the full specs of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1 below.
